H3 Reciprocating-Head AR-15 Buffer — 5.15 oz.
This American-made, two-piece H3 buffer features a reciprocating head and sliding-weight design engineered to help reduce bolt bounce during full-auto fire and use with rapid-reset trigger systems. It is standard carbine length at 3.25 inches and weighs approximately 5.15 ounces.
The solid-steel rear section creates a dead-blow effect against the bolt carrier. For this action to function properly, there should be approximately a 1/8-inch gap between the head and buffer body. This gap is set at the factory and requires no adjustment.
These buffers have been extensively tested in numerous AR configurations, including setups with barrels as short as 7 inches. Testing has shown that the 5.1–5.2-ounce range provides excellent performance with rapid-reset trigger systems. The reciprocating-head design follows the same operating principle used in the Colt Model 635 submachine gun introduced during the 1980s.

The 4.3-ounce sliding section matches the moving weight found in a conventional tungsten H3 buffer. By using 8620 steel instead of tungsten, this design provides the necessary moving mass while significantly reducing manufacturing cost.
When comparing H3 buffers, look beyond the advertised total weight. The weight of the internal sliding portion is critical—a buffer can meet the overall H3 weight range while still having insufficient moving mass to effectively control bolt bounce.
